Which Passport?
It's origin determines your destiny...
, by Emmanuel Higgins
What is the best form of identity that you could have if you were travelling in a foreign country? Yes, It would be, of course, your passport. Now your passport answers some very important questions. It says who you are, what your nationality is, it has a picture of you and gives a passport number that is unique to only you. Because of these things, we say the passport is your identity.
Now, let's shift our focus off this temporal, earthly identity and open the Bible to see if we can discover a different sort of identity!
Where could our spiritual identity come from?
"Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence." - John 18:36
So there is a kingdom which is of heavenly origin, and is not of this world. If the kingdom of Christ is of heaven, then who claims to be the prince of this world?
"Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:" - Ephesians 2:2
So the prince of the power of the air, who is in "this world", is the "the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience". No doubt this is Satan the deceiver who works in those that disobey God. 2. Corinthians says it like this:
"In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.." - 2. Corinthians 4:4
So we see there are two kingdoms. The heavenly kingdom of Christ, and the earthly kingdom of Satan. Does the Bible teach of any other kingdoms? Can our spiritual identity lie in anything other than one of these two kingdoms? Jesus says:
"He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth." - Luke 11:23
Indeed not! There are only two sides. Throughout the Bible is portrayed a great conflict between the powers of darkness, and the powers of light; between Christ and His angels and Satan and his angels. Christ says that he that is not with me is against me. There is no fence-sitting in this matter.
Therefore our identity must lie in one of these two kingdoms. Either in the earthly kingdom of death or in the heavenly kingdom of life.
Let's compare the 'passports' of these two kingdoms:
Kingdom of Satan | Kingdom of Christ | |
Who: | "children of disobedience" (Ephesians 2:2) | "heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ;" (Romans 8:17) |
Nationality: | "of this world" (Luke 16:8) | "they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly" (Hebrews 11:16) |
Photo ID: | Bear the likeness of Satan (Psalms 115:8) | Bearing the image of God (2 Corinthians 3:18) |
So, dear reader, who issued your passport? Are you daily seeking to ally yourself with the kingdom of Christ?
What a tragedy it would be if Christ would say of us:
"I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." - Matthew 7:23
Let's make sure we know which side we are on. Remember there can't be any fence-sitting in this matter. Christ says if we aren't for him, we are against him.
Therefore He bids us:
"Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon" - Isaiah 55:6-7
