I Want to be an Olive Tree
Humility vs Pride
, by Emmanuel Higgins

Psalm 52 begins with a stark picture of human arrogance and deceit. The psalmist describes someone who "boasts in evil" and whose "tongue plots destruction," delighting in lies rather than in God's goodness.
"Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The steadfast love of God endures all the day. Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit. You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right." - Psalm 52:1-3
This vividly portrays the self-reliance and destructive nature of those who choose their own path, believing their power or craftiness will secure them. But the psalmist immediately shows the ultimate emptiness of such a life. God will surely bring judgment upon those who reject His ways.
"But God will break you down forever; he will snatch and tear you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living." - Psalm 52:5
This demonstrates that any strength or security built on human pride, wickedness, or deceit is utterly fragile and will ultimately fail. The temporary gains of the wicked are nothing compared to God's eternal justice. We are reminded that true stability comes only from God, not from human efforts or evil schemes. "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain." - Psalm 127:1a
Like a Green Olive Tree in the House of God
Now, let's turn to the glorious contrast that David presents! Instead of boasting in himself, he declares his trust in God, likening himself to a "green olive tree in the house of God."
"But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever." - Psalm 52:8
This imagery is so incredibly rich!
1. Rooted and Flourishing in God's Presence ❤️
An olive tree is known for its deep roots and its ability to thrive even in difficult conditions, providing fruit and oil. To be "in the house of God" speaks of constant dwelling in His presence, under His care and provision. Just as a plant draws nourishment from the soil and sunlight, we draw spiritual life, strength, and fruitfulness from our relationship with God.
"He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers." - Psalm 1:3
This verse from Psalm 1 beautifully echoes the idea of a believer who is deeply rooted in God's Word and sustained by Him, flourishing and bearing fruit in due season. Our vitality comes not from our own efforts, but from being connected to the living water that God provides.
2. Humility and Dependence 🌿
A plant is utterly dependent. It cannot move itself, provide its own water, or generate its own sunlight. It relies entirely on its environment and the care of the gardener. Similarly, as believers, we are called to humble ourselves and depend fully on God for everything – for our salvation, our daily needs, our strength, and our wisdom.
"Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you." - 1Peter 5:6-7
This humility is not weakness, but a recognition of God's infinite power and our finite nature. It's in this surrender that we find true strength and peace.
3. Trusting in God's Steadfast Love ✨
David's declaration, "I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever," is the anchor of this passage. It's God's hesed – His loyal, unfailing, covenant love – that is the foundation of our security. It's not our goodness, our strength, or our wisdom that sustains us, but His enduring love.
"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." - Lamentations 3:22-23
This trust allows us to rest in the knowledge that God is always working for our good, even when circumstances are challenging. Like the olive tree, we can stand firm because our roots are in His unfailing love.
A Challenge for Our Lives
What a powerful contrast this psalm provides! When we are tempted to rely on our own cleverness, strength, or resources, let us remember the warning against the futility of such boasting. Instead, let us choose the path of humility and dependence.
Let us actively cultivate our lives to be "like a green olive tree in the house of God." This means:
-
Dwelling in His Word: Spending time in Scripture, allowing it to nourish our souls. "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." - Psalm 119:105
-
Praying Continually: Staying in constant communication with our Heavenly Father. "Pray without ceasing." - 1Thessalonians 5:17
-
Trusting His Love: Resting in His unfailing love and provision, even amidst trials. "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." - Romans 8:28
May our lives be a testament to the security and flourishing that comes from trusting solely in the Lord! 🙏📖
