Our First & Highest Priority
A Habitation for the Mighty God
, by Emmanuel Higgins
Priorities... most of us have grappled with them. Trying to pack as much as we can in our day; getting that delicate balance between, work, family, faith, recreation, etc.
Let's take a step back from everything.
When we wake up in the morning, and before we go to our rest at night, what is the first and highest priority? What should be on our mind?
Well, when your mind first gains conscious thought in the morning, what do you find yourself thinking about? Just before you drift off into blissful abandon at night, what thoughts are turning over and over in your mind?
Listen now to our brother David, speaking in the psalms about somthing that was incredibly important to him.
Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;
I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,
Until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.Psalms 132:3-5
“
Notice the intensity in which this is written. I will not go to my house. I will not go to rest. I will not allow myself to doze to sleep, until... what? Until he has found a place for the Lord, a habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.
Now it was David's vow and desire to build a sactuary that God could dwell in. This privilege however, was given to his son Solomon. But the meaning behind these verses are much deeper than that. Consider the following.
For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
Isaiah 57:15What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1 Corinthians 6:19“
Above any earthly building or structure, where does God want to dwell? Where does God wish to make His habitation? Yes! In you and I. We are the temple of the Holy Ghost. God wishes to dwell in our mind to strengthen us, speak to us and guide us to the heavenly inheritance.
Like David in Psalms 132, may our earnest, solemn and sincere desire be to say:
"I will not give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids until... I have found a place for the Lord, a habitation for the mighty God of Jacob... in my heart"
“
This is our first and highest work. More important than any other is to know what we are abiding in Christ. This is it friends. Doesn't matter what happens to us, or what happends during the day. Let our first waking thought be to connect with our God and our Saviour. And may the last thoughts before we drift off to sleep every night, be to make sure we are right with God and that He is dwelling with us.
Our first and highest duty is to know that we are abiding in Christ. He must do the work; but we are to seek to know what saith the Lord, yielding our lives to his guidance. When we have the spirit of an abiding Christ, everything will take on a changed aspect. The Saviour alone can give us the rest and peace we need; and every invitation he gives us to seek the Lord, is a call to abide in him. It is an invitation not merely to come to him, but to remain in him.

Dear Reader, may the Lord bless you as you seek to know Him and walk in His ways.
