In Search of Peace
7.5 Billion People are Searching for Peace
, by Liesl Higgins
We all dream of a life of peace, joy and satisfaction. Why is it that so few seem to get that? Is it beyond our reach in this turbulent world?
Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you..." John 14:27
Yes! There is a kind of peace Jesus promised to us.
Have we experienced this peace? If not, the words of Scripture come to us today:
“Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.” Job 22:21
How is peace to be attained, according to this verse? It is through acquainting ourselves with God.
How do I do that? Well, we acquaint ourselves with people by spending time with them, and showing an interest in them.
We acquaint ourselves with God in a similar way. By spending time with Him, and learning about Him through His Word and through nature.
The more we get to know someone, the more they seem to just be always on our mind. Likewise, as we come to know Christ more, the Prince of Peace, corresponding thoughts weave their way through our day. And the promise is:
"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” Isaiah 26:3
What a beautiful picture! Perfect peace comes as our mind is kept upon God.
In contrast, we look at those who turn away from the Source of perfect peace:
"There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked.” Isaiah 48:22
Yes, there is only one source for this peace: our Redeemer. And to those who turn away from the offer of peace, He longingly says:
“O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river..."
Isaiah 48:18
Here we have another clue into de-mystifying peace: hearkening to His commandments.
The wisest man, Solomon, confirms this:
“...let thine heart keep my commandments:
“For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.”
Proverbs 3:1-2
David, too, agrees:
“Great peace have they which love thy law...” Psalms 119:165
Do you love His law? Love to the law is shown by obedience to it. Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commandments."
Disobedience or transgression of God's perfect law of life, results in guilt and the absence of peace. Peace only comes as we come into harmony with God and the law of life.
Here are some incredible promises of peace as we follow the true God of the Bible:
"Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.”
Philippians 4:9"Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.”
Psalms 37:37"And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.”
Isaiah 32:17
Do you want peace? Do you want assurance for ever? The Bible has the only true way.
Acquaint yourself with Christ & His Word, and follow those things contained in that Word. Then you too, dear reader, can have peace - great peace.
