What is life eternal in the simplest of language?

"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." John 17:3

What does it mean to 'Know God'? How is that experience gained? First, let's look in history at the lives of some who 'knew God'.

"And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend." - Exodus 33:11

Moses, the meekest man on earth (Numbers 12:3), had the experience of speaking with God face to face, as a man speaketh to his friend. Moses was the friend of God! Standing in the strength and wisdom of God, he led (in estimation) more than 2.5 million people out of the land of Egypt!

"And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God." - James 2:23

Abraham, the man who left his home country at the call of God, and in faith, journeyed to a foreign land, was called God's friend!

What a glorious prospect, to actually be the friend of God! Many people consider God as being distant and impersonal, but the Bible portrays no such God. Salvation in essence, is to know God. To have a personal friendship with the almighty ruler and creator! This has to be the highest, noblest life possible for us. Imagine being able to talk with God as a friend, like Moses. Imagine having the calmest peace and assurance no matter what happens or no matter where you are, that you have a mighty powerful friend by your side with whom you can share your worries, perplexities and cares, as well as your joys and happy moments, and who promises to give you wisdom and strength sufficient for the trials of each day.

How amazing and beautiful is this prospect!
