Consider the Lilies
Learning to give the reins to God
, by Emmanuel Higgins
Do you sometimes find it a challenge to commit everything to God, trusting that He will direct your life? Perhaps this is one of the hardest things to do.
Deep down in our heart we like to be in charge. We like to plan our future education, future career, future spouse etc.
Years ago when my family lived on a small hobby farm, I used to enjoy the occasional ride on our horses. As you probably know, the horse is guided by reins, a bridal and a bit. The reins extend from the bit in the horse’s mouth, to where the rider sits, and enables the rider to turn the horse by pulling to the left or right.
When we become a follower of Christ, we literally should hand over the reins of our life to be guided and directed by Him.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
What should we do? Trust God with how much of our heart? Everything! And don’t depend on our own understanding, but in everything we do we should turn to God, ask Him for wisdom, guidance and help and what is the promise? He will direct our paths!
If you are unsure of what to do next in your life, turn to your friend Jesus. Lay all your plans at His feet. Ask for guidance in choosing the right path. Be watchful for the hand of providence and don’t make a decision until you are certain this is what Christ would do.
God may cause things to happen which will clearly show you the direction He wants you to take. He may strongly impress your mind with the direction He wants you to take. Or He may simply speak to you through the principles laid out in the Bible and direct your feet in the right path.
In any case, the promise, by the God who cannot lie, is that if we trust him and acknowledge him in all our ways, that he will direct our paths.
But perhaps you’re struggling to trust God entirely. Yes, it’s not easy to surrender our life entirely to the control of God, and make plans as He leads, but... Consider the Lilies.
“Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, [shall he] not much more [clothe] you, O ye of little faith?” – Matthew 6:28-30
And the birds of the air
“Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?” – Matthew 6:26
If God so clothes the flowers of the field, and if God so cares for the birds of the air, won’t he care for you? Yes of course! So whenever you’re tempted to doubt the providence of God. Consider the lilies.

What a beautiful thought! How sweet it is to trust that He will direct our paths, so long as we acknowledge Him in all our ways! No matter what our perplexities and uncertainties about the future, it is so wonderful to really believe that He is in control and will do all things for our ultimate happiness and salvation! What a wonderful and compassionate God! Thank you for this gem.
